Who was John Jacob Astor?

John Jacob Astor IV was born on July 13, 1864, at his parents' country estate of Ferncliff in Rhinebeck, New York. He was the youngest of five children and only son of William Backhouse Astor Jr., a businessman, collector, and racehorse breeder/owner, and Caroline Webster "Lina" Schermerhorn, a Dutch-American socialite.

When did John Jacob Astor start his fur business?

John Jacob Astor opened his own fur trade shop in 1786 and often traveled to the wilderness to procure furs for the shop. A few years later, he made his first real estate investment. All of his fur businesses were merged into the American Fur Company in 1808.

What happened to John Jacob Astor IV?

John Jacob Astor IV, wearing a distinguished dinner suit and clutching his personalised pocket watch, was last sighted on the deck of the Titanic. His body was recovered by the cable ship Mackay-Bennett on 22 April, identified by the initials sewn into his jacket, and the watch which was engraved with the initials J.J.A.
